A fond farewell to my roomie

March 23rd, 2008 (254 views )

Colleen left the IZ three days ago, and this morning, for the first time, I wasn’t surprised by the sight of her empty bunk. The first couple of nights were pretty rough; I was very lonely and found that I couldn’t get the “Saying Goodbye” song from The Muppets Take Manhattan out of my head.

Colleen is embarking on a journey that, to me, makes her awfully courageous – she is walking away from a good corporate job to become a full time student again. Resurrecting a dream that she pushed aside ten years ago, she has entered an accelerated education program that will result in her becoming what she has always truly wanted to be: a nurse. I can’t think of a more honorable and desperately needed profession, and Colleen has all of the skills to do it well.

So I ask all of you, my family and friends, to keep Colleen in your thoughts and prayers as she makes this incredible transition. And selfishly, if you could pray for me a bit as I finish out my tour here, I would appreciate it as well. Despite the fact that I can now control the air conditioner, my little home away from home is not as warm and welcoming as it was when I shared it with “The Princess”.

Best of luck, Colleen, and we’re all very proud of you!!

I know how empty a place can be when you are used to someone being there all the time; now you know how we felt when you left home for college and then the Army and then when you got married. It gives the one behind a new perspective and appreciation for the way life can change the relationships we have with people we live with. Fortunately, you are counting down as well, so know that we are praying for you daily and that your return is a safe and speedy one! I am sure you will be missed by those you leave behind there!
All our love,
Mom and Dad

Heard your days are down to single digits. With your roommate gone, this must make for long, lonely days. But it won't be long before you will be home for good!!

We really missed you yesterday at the Easter services. The whole church was filled, we sang well, and the brass outdid themselves. The spirit of the risen Christ was truly present at St. Paul's on Easter Day. You were, as usual, named in the Prayers for the People. We all especially remember you every Sunday during that time.

We are all praying for your safe return, Marissa. Just take one day at a time, and you will be home before you know it. We all know this is a difficult time for you--but God will see you through.

I remember when I was getting ready to ETS and my roomate ETS'd and returned home to the United States Virgin Island.
The same feelings that you are going through right now I endured...I looked at the brighter side, I was returning home to find a wife and start a family. Only difference, you have a husband who is waiting for you once you get back from this deployment. Again, I don't know any of the Captains that had the IRR recall, but your blogs have been interesting and I know that being in the Army there are bonds that never break. You all have did wonderful things and did what was expected. Be grateful that your loving families will be there waiting for you once you are finished doing an excellent job at being professional, when you never probably thought you'd end up serving in the Armed forces after getting out. I am grateful that you all did an honorable thing by keeping your word.

Be safe and return with joy to those who love you and have been praying for your safe return.

Sincere Regards,
Thomas Huggins
